The Role

Reporting to the Director of Programs, the Gender & Protection technical advisor is to oversee the implementation of quality GBV prevention and response activities, building capacity and develop/adjust program strategies through proposal development.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  •  Contribute to ongoing assessments and analyses to better understand protection risks, to map points of service for survivors of GBV and vulnerable individuals, and to identify support structures.
  •  Contribute to program design and the preparation of concept notes and proposals
  • Identify and reinforce existing support mechanisms and work closely with local counterparts to ensure community buy-in and cultural appropriateness of activities.
  • Strengthen case management and referral systems.
  • Work with teams and communities to develop appropriate prevention and awareness-raising/behavior change strategies.
  • Train GBV staff to become leaders of GBV prevention and response. Depending on skill sets and required roles, trainings may include: gender, guiding principles of addressing GBV, GBV case management, referral pathway development, compassionate care, facilitation skills, mobilization, project cycle management, etc.
  • Contribute to information-sharing and data management systems.
  • Compile monthly and quarterly reports, on time and with accurate data.
  • Actively participate in protection/GBV working groups and contribute to interagency initiatives, also promoting SAADO presence in the cluster.
  • Ensure maximum visibility of the agency amongst the UN and NGO community
  • Contribute to the positive image and overall credibility of the organization, notably through the application of the organization’s Code of Conduct.
  • Participate in developing broader sector strategies through influence of and leadership within inter-agency coordination forums, including taking on a co-chairing role where needs demand
  • Assist in the selection, training and support of qualified program staff
  • Develop support strategies for staff and introduce principles of self-care.
  • Develop work plans in line with financial pipelines.
  • Line management responsibility for the GBV Specialist, and Child Protection Specialist

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in Social Work, Public Health, International Development or other relevant field of stud with atleast 5 to 7 years’ experience in GBV program design and implementation.
  • Proven knowledge and experience in developing and implementing community mobilization projects.
  • Familiarity with standards and guidelines for GBV programming and coordination as well as guidance on protection.
  • Familiarity with international humanitarian operations, coordination structures, and the mandates of donors, UN agencies, and other NGOs.
  • Demonstrated ability to set up monitoring & evaluation systems in large complex Programs.
  • Excellent communication, analytical skills, organization and writing/editing skills.
